5/83 Garden Cottage

Cottage. Mid-C17, extended late C17 or early C18 with later additions and
alterations. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; stone slate roof. Original 2-cell
plan extended by one bay to left in late C17 or early C18. One storey and attic.
Original part has small C19 casement with wood lintel to left and right of
roughly central glazed door; 2 leaded gabled eaves dormers. Slightly recessed
extension has glazed door to right with small C19 casement to left and one above
directly below eaves. Integral end stack to right with dripstone and capping has
prominent semi-circular bread oven projection to base with 2 massive stone slabs
as cap. Rear has C19 casements with wood lintels, 2 directly below eaves and 3
to ground floor. Interior. Centre and right ground-floor rooms (now knocked into
one) have deep-chamfered spine beam and oak winder staircase to right of
fireplace. Single-purlin roof with principal rafters rising from wall tops, in 3
bays to original cottage and extended by one bay to left.
