Shown on O.S. map as Langford Grange.
House. Probably mainly early C17 but possibly incorporating parts of a medieval
building; partly remodelled early C18 with C19 additions and alterations.
Roughly coursed and dressed limestone rubble with alternating angle quoins;
stone slate roofs with moulded parapet, coped verges and ball finials to 3
gables of main range and plain coped verges to right gable end. Basic L-plan
comprising 3-bay main range with slightly lower possibly medieval gabled range
on left projecting to rear; C19 additions in angle to rear. 2 storeys and
attics. Main range has 3 glazing bar sashes in earlier moulded surrounds to
first floor and glazing bar sashes of reduced proportions, also in earlier
moulded surrounds with dripstones, to prominent gabled full dormers. Ground
floor has three 4-paned sashes and a contemporary glazed French casement (second
from left) in earlier surrounds linked by a continuous hoodmould. Integral end
stacks with dripstones and plain moulded capping. Gabled range to left (note
straight joint) has 3 casements with wood lintels to ground floor (including 2
2-storey lean-to attached to left) and glazing bar sash in chamfered stone
surround to right on first floor. Integral end stack similar to those of main
range to red brick shafts to left of gabled range. Various gabled rubblestone
and brick outbuildings attached to lean-to. Full-height narrow gabled range to
rear probably C19 but incorporates several reused medieval fragments, possibly
brought in from elsewhere. These include a small narrow chamfered lancet to
apex, a window with 2-light bar tracery having remnants of a hoodmould and
decorative carving to top and bottom of chamfered mullion, a carved head below
the latter window and 2 pieces of moulding above and to either side. Lower down
is a mutilated piece of later medieval tracery with what appears to be part of a
drain or water-spout incorporated. Below and to left is a narrow round-headed
window with a C19 imitation to right. At right-angles to this range is a
single-storey twin-gabled entrance porch with a panelled door under pedimented
hood to right gable. Interior. Not inspected at tine of resurvey (May 1987) but
likely to be of interest. Panelled window shutters to front rooms of main range.
