Mill and mill house. Mid- to late C18 incorporating parts of an earlier
building; later additions and alterations. Uncoursed limestone rubble; stone
slate roofs. Mill house a basic L-plan with main range (2-cell baffle-entry
plan) linked to L-shaped mill building to left. Mill house. One storey and
attic. Main range has 2-light Gothic casements with wood lintels to either side
of central ledged door; 2 contemporary gabled eaves dormers also with Gothic
glazing, directly above. Infilled doorway to far left. Stone ridge stack
immediately to left of centre and integral end stack to right, both with
dripstones. Lower range set back to right has C20 casement to centre and raking
eaves dormer in angle to left; external end stack with dripstones to right. Rear
has C20 casements and gabled eaves dormers including to projecting range and C20
French windows to main range. Two-seater privy in small gabled addition attached
to projecting range. Mill. 3 storeys. Segmental brick arch to right over wooden
undershot wheel with infilled opening to left. Sun fire insurance plate and
Britannia fire insurance plate; C19 casement and iron S-braces to centre on
first floor. Small single-storey office attached to left corner; coped segmental
pediment and early C19 round-headed window with red brick end stack above. Left
gable end has stable doors to ground floor, plank door to first floor and
weatherboarded gabled hoist projection to second floor. C19 red brick
segmental-headed casements to left return and rear gable. Interior. House much
altered late C20 chamfered ceiling beans and carved C18 wooden fireplace
surround brought in from elsewhere to end stack of main range. Mill has
stone-flag floor and chamfered ceiling beams to ground floor. Wooden cogs and
gearing for wheel. Trough for flour and chutes coming from floor above. First
floor has chamfered ceiling beans, 3 corn bins, millstone not in situ and C18
ladder staircase to second floor. This has pulleys for lifting gear and
double-purlin collar truss roof with chutes to corn bins below. A mill is
recorded at Little Faringdon in Domesday. Although the mill is no longer in
production, the wheel is still in working order.
