House. Probably C16 or earlier with later additions and alterations including
renovations of c.1939 by Clough Williams Ellis for Mrs. Anthony Gillson of
Cornwell Manor (q.v.). Uncoursed ironstone and limestone rubble; straw thatch
and stone slate roofs, thatch being renewed at time of resurvey (September
1987). Present H-plan comprises central hall range with cross passage in angle
with slightly projecting gabled range to right; similar slightly projecting
range to left is probably later. 2 storeys. Left gable has small C19 casement on
first floor and C20 glazed door beneath. C19 paired casement to centre on ground
floor of hall range and 2-light cavetto-moulded mullion window with leaded
latticed lights directly below eaves to left of chamfered pointed doorway with
hoodmould to far right. This is possibly C14, apparently in situ, and has
opposing infilled doorway to rear. Right gable has C20 leaded latticed casement
on each floor. Axial rubblestone ridge stack and small rubblestone ridge stack
to left and right of hall range respectively, by Clough Williams Ellis. Lean-to
with horseshoe arch partly cutting into right gable has stepped lateral stack,
probably also by Clough Williams Ellis. C19 casements and sashes to rear.
Interior. Inspection not possible at time of resurvey but likely to be of
(Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p557)
