House, now shop and restaurant. Early C17 with later additions and
alterations. Timber framed with plaster infill, slate roof. 2 storeys
and attics; 3 gables, left projecting over passageway; framing: survives
to first floor, decorative herringbone work forming lozenge shapes with
incised quatrefoils and trefoils to middle rail, further decorative
carving to rail above window of left gable; cusped fretwork bargeboards
and pointed finial to gables probably C19; passageway to left has close
studding with long straight tension brace to right wall, heavy chamfered
beams and flat joists with dragon beam to front connecting with rail
which has mortice holes for vertical posts; mid-C19 fenestration to first
floor and attic, 3-light horizontal sliding sash to each gable on first floor and
narrow pointed window with Gothic glazing above, C20 shopfronts below;
red brick stack in roof slope behind ridge to right and internal end
stack to left, also behind ridge. 2-storey rendered range to rear,
possibly concealing timber frame, has 2 ridge stacks. Spur stones to
passageway. Interior: first floor has timber frame exposed, square
panels with straight tension braces and herringbone decoration forming
lozenge patterens; inserted chamfered cross-beam ceiling. Graded II*
as a good example of a substantial early C17 town house.
