House, latterly inn, now divided into shops. Late C16 but possibly
incorporating parts of an earlier structure, later additions and
alterations. Timber framed with plaster and red brick infill, largely
planted and painted in imitation to front, slate roof. Long central
range (possibly originally open to roof) with projecting gables to left,
right and centre, that to right forming cross-wing; C19 single-storey
lean-to additions in space between main range and gables. One storey and
attic with 2 storeys to gables; irregular fenestration, C20 casements
to first floor of left and centre gables with contemporary fixed-light
stained glass window to right gable, gabled half-dormer between left
and centre gables, former of which has C19 fixed-light window to ground
floor, C19 shopfronts to lean-to additions and 4 doors, that to right
of plank construction and probably moved out from passageway behind;
gable to right has late C20 shopfront; prominent axial red brick
ridge stack behind centre gable and reddish brown stack to left gable;
framing: exposed to left and right returns of cross-wing to rear,in
passageway, on back wall of main range and right wall of twin-gabled range
to rear, large square panels. Interior: timber frame exposed throughout,
close studding to ground floor of main range and square panels elsewhere,
chamfered ceiling beams with variety of stops; massive stone stack has
inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel on ground floor;
first floor has roof trusses of Queen-strut type with double purlins and
short straight windbraces exposed, 3 short bays to left gable and
2 unequal bays to main range, the left one of considerable width.
