Description

SJ 2829-2929 OSWESTRY C.P. MASERFIELD (south side)

12/84 St. Oswald's Well
10.9.51

- II

Holy well. Of indeterminate but probably medieval date considerably
restored by Corporation of Oswestry in 1907 (datestone). Regularly
coursed sandstone and conglomerate rubble with plain stepped coping.
Roughly carved round arch with voussoirs and C20 iron grille; spring
behind and below. Commemorates King Oswald, killed at the Battle of
Maserfield, in 642; it is said that an eagle picked up his arm, flew with
it and dropped it at this site whence a spring miraculously gushed forth.
The surroundings of the well were landscaped in 1985. David Hugh Farmer,
The Oxford Dictionary of Saints (1978) pp. 304-5.
