Farmhouse. Probably partly C16, extensively re-modelled 1695 (datestone)
with later additions and alterations. Painted brick and rubblestone,
replacing timber frame,on painted rubblestone plinth, graded slate roofs.
Central hall range with projecting 2-storey gabled porch and flanking
cross-wings. 2 storeys; mid-C19 casements, one on each floor to cross-
wings and to either side of porch, which has a window above round-headed
outer arch; inner door nail-studded with decorated strap hinges; reddish
brown brick ridge stack to right of porch and integral lateral stacks to
outer walls of cross-wings (top of right-hand one re-built in C19 yellow
brick), all with paired rebated shafts and moulded capping. Datestone
H to gable of porch with pigeon nesting holes and ledges to
T A front gables of cross-wings, which also have wall-plate and
1695 purlin ends exposed. C19 full-length lean-to, comprising
dairy and pantry, to rear. Interior: chamfered ceiling
beams throughout with straight-cut and ogee stops; inglenook fireplace
to right-hand cross-wing has chamfered segmental-headed wooden lintel,
massive chimney breast below ridge stack but C20 brick fireplace to hall
range; several plank and muntin doors, some with decorated strap hinges;
most interesting feature is straight-flight oak staircase in right cross-
wing, probably late C17 with decorated carved newel-posts and moulded
handrail turning at right-angles to left and right on first floor; queen-
strut roofs in 2 bays to cross-wings with central truss exposed to right
cross-wing.
