9/205 Nos. 1 and 2,
- Redwith Cottages

- II

House. C14 or C15, re-modelled C19 and extensively altered late C20.
Rendered brick concealing and partly replacing cruck-framed structure,
slate roof and integral end stacks. Original plan probably a 2-bay
open hall with service bay at left-hand end; later floored over and
right-hand bay of hall demolished, service bay latterly used as cowhouse
and hayloft. 2 storeys; late C20 neo-Georgian windows to left and right
of contemporary central door and gabled half-dormers above. Interior:
raising of eaves in C19 has preserved 2 true cruck trusses (exposed
in No. 2) with collars and Alcock apex-type B (right-hand also arch-
braced); dividing wall between Nos. 1 and 2 has close studding and 2
infilled doorways marking position of former screens passage; timber
frame (square panels) also partly preserved to former back wall; main
ground-floor room to No. 2 has chamfered cross-beam ceiling displaying
heavy joists with ogee stops. Alcock (1981) p. 144.
