4/47 Smithy Cottage
GV II
Cottage. Probably C17 with later additions and alterations. Uncoursed
limestone rubble; graded slate roof has coped verges to left and integral
end stack with dripstone. 2-room plan with integral end stack behind entrance
to gable end. 2 storeys. Mid-C19 casements, one to left of centre on
ground floor and one on each floor to right. Wide sloping buttress and
infilled opening to left. Boarded door to left gable end and secondary
internal end stack in roof slope to right. C19 rubblestone lean-to to
rear on right and addition set back to left. Interior. Deep-chamfered
spine beams and heavy joists to ground- floor rooms; timber framed cross
wall and wall posts visible beneath wallpaper. Large inglenook fireplace
with C19 mantel-shelf to left room and Victorian cast-iron grate to fireplace
in right room. The plan form appears to be a type illustrated in P. Smith,
Houses of the Welsh Countryside (1975) Fig.185; pls.45, 100 and 101.
