7/73 The Fords
Farmhouse. Early C17, extended late C17 and early C18 and partly rebuilt
early C19 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with red
brick infill, rebuilding and additions, painted and partly rendered to front;
graded slate and plain tile roofs. Rough L-plan comprising rebuilt 2-
bay hall range with lower 2-bay range to left and gabled cross-wing projecting
to right. One storey and attic and 2 storeys. Framing: to cross-wing,
exposed to rear and right wall, rendered below tie beam to front gable:
square panels, 2 from girding beam to wall-plate, rebuilt in C20 red brick
below; collar and tie beam end trusses with V-struts from collar and projecting
double-purlin ends. Front gable has glazing bar sash window on each floor.
Red brick stack in roof slope to right of ridge. Hall range,rebuilt in
C19 brick has 2 glazing bar sashes on first floor and one to lower left.
Mid-C19 yellow brick gabled porch to right with round-headed outer arch
and contemporary half-glazed inner door. Range to left with lower but
steeper roof pitch has toothed band below eaves, continued to left gable
end with projecting brick X-shapes above and dentilled band and stepped
cross to apex. Gabled full dormer to left, rendered to apex, has 2-light
C19 multi-paned cast-iron casement. Segmental-headed half-glazed C20 door
directly below. Projecting 2-storey timber framed gabled porch to right,
probably early C17, has slightly projecting bressumers to first floor and
attic, upper with dentilled carving, supported on carved corner brackets.
Close studding with middle rail to ground floor and planted cusped quatrefoil
decoration to panels below 3-light multi-paned cast-iron casement on first
floor; carved decoration to vertical struts to apex. There is no sign
of a doorway to the porch. Prominent red brick ridge stack in 4 sections
immediately to right at junction with early C18 gabled brick range to rear.
This has crow-stepped gable to rear. Lean-to porch in angle between ranges
over C17 plank door. Early C19 brick lean-to to rear in space between
early C18 gabled range and rear gable of cross-wing, heightended to left
in late C19 to form 2-storey gable. Interior. Inspection not possible
at time of resurvey (May 1986) but likely to be of interest.
