Manor house, latterly farmhouse, now school . Early C17, extended early
to mid-C19 with later additions and alterations. Red brick (English Garden
Wall bond) with sandstone ashlar dressings and alternating angle quoins;
hipped plain tile roof. H-plan consisting of 3-bay hall range with 2-
bay cross-wings to left and right. 2 storeys and attic with continuous
moulded string course carried down around entrance and with wooden sprocketed
eaves cornice. Chamfered plinth and cellars under cross-wings lit by 2
small mullion windows (now partly blocked) to each cross-wing. 2:3:2 bays;
stone mullioned and transomed windows, partly renewed in C19; centre window
on first floor infilled and C19 transomed window inserted. Central entrance
has moulded stone door surround with restored cambered arch. Nail-studded
plank door looks C20 but has C17 fleur-de-lys pointed strap hinges. External
lateral stack to right cross-wing with top and diagonal twin shafts rebuilt
in C20 purple brick and infilled 2-light mullion window to left; similar
stacks with original shafts to small gabled projections to left cross-wing.
Twin-gabled range to rear in angle between cross-wings, left with C19 stone
mullioned and transomed window to first floor and right with 4-light mullion
window to first floor and sash window with thick glazing bars to ground
floor. Large stack behind to back wall of hall range has three C20 diagonal
shafts. Prominent C19 and C20 additions to rear and right of right cross-
wing are not of special architectural interest. Range to left of left cross-
wing has late C17 red brick to right bay below eaves level but remainder
of brickwork including to 3 crow-step gables above toothed eaves cornice
looks C19. Three C19 wooden mullioned and transomed windows to each floor.
Plain tile roof has brick ridge stack with 3 attached and rebated shafts
to right of centre. Wall attached to left: probably late C17 or early
C18. Red brick with sandstone coping ramped down in 3 sections following
curve for distance of approximately 60m. Similar wall attached to front
right corner of right cross-wing, also following curve for distance of
approximately 60m. Narrow segmental-headed arch to each stretch of wall.
Interior. Entrance hall has early C17 square oak panelling and bench with
turned balusters around front and right walls. Two C17 panelled doors
to back wall flanking C19 fireplace; 2 boxed-in cross beams. Room to left
also panelled but panelling either C19 or brought in from elsewhere; 2 chamfered
cross beams with stepped stops and later decoration to underside; moulded
cornice. Richly carved overmantel with naked human figures to left wall
in C17 style but possibly a C19 imitation. Similar fireplace overmantel
in room to right of entrance hall. C18 stone staircase with stick balusters
and wreathed handrail with turned baluster in passage to left of entrance
hall. Main staircase in rear right gable of hall range. Mid-C17 of dog-
leg type; openwork splat balusters with strap-work decoration to closed
string and newel-posts, which have carved pointed finials; moulded handrail
and carved pendants. C19 stained glass to mullioned and transomed window
on staircase. First-floor rooms have wide boarded oak floor boards and
chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut stops. Infilled mullion window
to original rear gable of right cross-wing. Collar and tie beam roof in
3 short bays to main range and in 3 bays to cross-wings with half bay to
front forming hip of hipped roofs. B.o.E. p.312.
