8/22 White House


Cottage. Mid-to late C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber
framed with red brick infill [missing to lent bay at time of resurvey (October
1986)]. 2 right bays on sandstone plinth; slate roof, graded to left bay.
Apparently of 3 framed bays; left bay formerly stables but originally a byre,
although possibly slightly later than 2 right bays. One storey and attic.
Framing: rectangular panels, 2 from cill to wall-plate, with short straight
tension braces to 2 right bays; square panels, 3 from cill to wall-plate,
to left bay. Renewed queen-strut truss to left gable end. Late C20 fenestra-
tion: 2 casements to left of boarded door with glazed panel to top under
open gabled porch to right. 3 weatherboarded gabled eaves dormers. Integral
end stack to right. Interior. Only partial inspection possible at time
of resurvey (October 1986). Timber frame (square panels) exposed to wall
between left and right ground-floor rooms of house-part and to original back
wall (more irregular). Right room has chamfered spine beam and heavy joists
and large inglenook fireplace with plain wooden lintel; inset spice cupboard
with plank door to right. Red sandstone block wall between left room and
byre with doorway set above plinth. Small splayed observation window above
with splay facing byre. Chamfered spine beam to byre. Several panels to
internal walls said to retain wattle and daub infill. C20 rendered lean-
to to rear on right (replacing timber framed outshut) is not of special archi-
tectural interest. Salop County Sites and Monuments Record; PRN 527.
