5/86 The Old School
School, now house. Circa 1850 by Revd. John Parker, considerably altered
to rear and interior in late C20. Roughly coursed and dressed sandstone
rubble with ashlar dressings; slate roof with stepped coped verges.
Gothic style. Originally one storey now with first floor inserted; decorated
cornice to front and partly surviving to rear. Front has rectangular
chamfered 2-light mullion window to left and 3-light mullion window (centre
light with pointed head) in gable with armorial shield piercing eaves
to centre. Narrow rectangular chamfered window to right of buttress
to right of centre. Gabled porch to far right has pointed arch with inscription
"THAT THE SOUL BE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE IS NOT GOOD / EVEN A CHILD IS KNOWN
BY HIS DOINGS WHAT HER HIS WORK BE PURE". External lateral stack to
left of centre has gabled top to base and octagonal shaft with moulded
capping. West gable end has 2-light window with elaborate Gothic tracery.
to ground floor. Oval-shaped window above has blind Gothic tracery.
North side of gable cut by thin square turret with helm roof and carved
finial. East gable end has 3 stepped lancets to centre and rectangular
chamfered opening above with late C20 casement inserted. Rear considerably
altered in late C20 by insertion of large plate glass windows but retains
external lateral stack, similar to that to front, to left. Forms a
picturesque group with Llanyblodwel Post Office (q.v.). Included for
