Description

SO 3080-3180 CLUN C.P. CHURCH STREET
(South side)

15/97 Gwilliam Memorial
- approximately 24 metres
to North of North Aisle
of Church of St George

GV II

Chest tomb. Circa 1819, by J. Davies of Clun. Sandstone ashlar. Moulded
plinth, sunken side-panels flanking cable-fluted pilaster strips, raised
end panels, shaped quadrant corner-balusters, and moulded cornice to
chamfered top. To Thomas Gwilliam (died 1819). This tomb exhibits some
good early C19 carved lettering, and it is interesting that it is signed
because it is of a type of which there are 2 or 3 in this churchyard and
which appear to be limited to this area [cf: also Brown and Edwards
memorials (q.v.)].
