SO 29 NE

8/73 The Tin House

GV II

Farmhouse, now house. Late C15 or early C16, considerably remodelled
early C19 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with
rendered infill on rubblestone plinth; left-hand part of early C19
red brick with roughly coursed limestone rubble to gable end, corrugated
iron cladding to rear; slate roof has internal red brick end stack
to right and 2 external end stacks to left. Original plan probably
consisted of 2-bay cross-wing aligned north-south with now demolished
hall-range to east; gables of cross-wing removed so that former tie
beams are now wall-plates of present house; C19 addition built on site
of former hall range. 2 storeys and gable-lit attic. Framing: exposed
only to right side Of house and part of right gable end at time of
resurvey (October 1985), close studding with middle rail. Mid-C19 casement
on each floor to left lower with segmental head; right side has late
C20 three-light mullion window on each floor, lower in position of
original window; C20 lean-to porch to centre with boarded door. Interior:
timber frame exposed to former cross-wing, close studding to external
walls and square panels to cross wall; ceiling height of ground-floor
rooms increased, cross beams with mortices for former joists; upstairs
the principal rafters of former central truss survive to show cross-
wing was originally aligned north-south; there is also a wall post
with mortices at the junction of cross-wing and presumed former hall-
range. Also known as Nessmynydd.
