5/129 School Farmhouse


Farmhouse. Probably late C16 or C17, partly remodelled mid-C19 with
later additions and alterations. Roughcast probably concealing timber
frame on high painted brick and rubblestone plinth, latter material
also used for right gable end, back wall and extension to left; machine
tile roof with graded slate roof to rubblestone addition. Original
house of 2 or 3 framed bays, possibly jettied to front, extended to
left in C19. 2 storeys; 2 small mid-C19 casements to left of timber
framed part with boarded door below to centre flanked by mid-C19 three-
light casement (to left) and small fixed-light window (to right).
Integral end stack with red brick shaft to right and exposed double-
purlin ends to both gables. Lower C19 extension to left has one casement
on each floor, that to ground floor with segmental head; external
end stack has late C19 red brick shaft and projecting bread oven abutting.
Interior: inspection not possible at time of resurvey (December 1985)
but noted as having massive deep-chamfered cross beam and chamfered
joists with stepped ogee stops in room to left of entrance; straight-
flight oak staircase to rear has close-studded wall to left; several
plank and muntin doors with pointed strap hinges on ground floor.
