Cottage. C17 with later additions and alterations. Roughcast timber frame;
C20 cedar shingle roof. One storey and attic; 4 framed bays, including
chimney bay, right bay probably a slightly later addition. C19 fixed-light
window to left and C20 casement immediately to left of C20 gabled porch.
This has contemporary half-glazed outer door and inner, probably C17 plank
door. Small C20 window to right. 3 late C20 gabled eaves dormers. Brown
brick ridge stack to right of porch and red brick stack in roof slope to
rear on right. Interior. 3 rooms to ground floor with large, apparently
inserted stack to right of entrance. Timber frame (square panels) exposed
to cross wall between left and centre rooms, to back wall and fragmentarily
to front wall. 2 deep-chamfered spine beams to centre room and single -deep-
chamfered spine beam to right room, which has C18 moulded wooden cornice
to ceiling and contemporary wall cupboard in front right corner. Plank
door with probably C19 painting of a girl carrying a bowl on inside has rectan-
ular barred overlight and leads to oak winder staircase. Infilled doorway,
probably formerly external, blocked off by staircase. Straight-flight oak
staircase in left ground floor room. Wide boarded floor boards to first
floor and plank doors throughout. Double-purlin roof has trusses exposed
to left and right of rubblestone stack (partly plastered), left with raking
struts from tie beam to principal rafters and right with raking queen struts;
woven infill to panels. Full-length C20 lean-to to rear is not of special
architectural interest.
