4/81 No. 1 (Kempton Farmhouse)
Farmhouse. Late C17, extended mid-C19 with later additions and alterations.
Uncoursed and roughly coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings to C19
part; slate roofs. Long, late C17 range aligned east-west with T-shaped
C19 addition attached to east end; 2-storey lean-to in angle to south side
of C19 addition; lower C19 gabled range attached to west end of C17 part.
2 storeys to C17 part, 2 storeys and gable-lit attic with moulded eaves
cornice and plinth to C19 addition,which has cellar to front. C19 range
has 2-window front; contemporary wooden mullioned and transomed windows
with chamfered ashlar surrounds. External end stacks with red brick tops
and brown brick ridge stack to rear range. Entrance in angle to rear range;
6-panel door with rectangular barred overlight, panelled reveals and flat
bracketed hood. Slate-hanging to gable end, which has projecting double-
purlin ends. C17 part has three C19 casements directly below eaves and
one to ground floor to right. C20 casements to left flanking C20 half-
glazed door. Infilled doorway immediately to left of centre and integral
red brick end stack to right. Interior: C17 part has deep-chamfered cross
beam and heavy joists to right ground-floor room, which has large stack
with C19 cast-iron cooking range. First floor recently altered at time of
resurvey (August 1986): internal walls plastered over but retains C17 plank
doors with strap and L-hinges; original wide boarded floor boards.
