4/158 Hopesay Farmhouse
Farmhouse. Probably C17, eaves raised and partly remodelled mid-C18
with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with rendered
infill on high painted brick plinth, rendered and roughcast to rear
range with early C20 red brick gable end; uncoursed limestone rubble to
gable ends and rear of main range. Slate roof. L-plan with gabled
range projecting to rear on right; C19 two-storey lean-to (ground floor
formerly a dairy) to rear of main range. 2 storeys. Framing: one
square panel above high plinth with narrow rectangular panel to raising
of eaves. 3 late C20 wide rectangular casements directly below eaves
and contemporary casements to left and right of boarded door immediately
to left of centre on ground floor. Integral end stacks with late C19
brown brick shaft to left and purple brick shaft to right. Interior:
inspection not possible at time of resurvey (September 1986) but noted
as having timber framed cross wall (square panels) to right of entrance.
Deep-chamfered spine beams to ground-floor rooms of main range, which
have large stone inglenook fireplaces with chamfered wooden lintels,
segmental to left. Plank door in back wall of left room leads to dairy
and plank door with pointed strap hinges in back wall of right room leads
to rear range.
