Description

SO 38 SE; 4/162

HOPESAY C.P.,
RED LANE (south side),
Brook House

II

Farmhouse, now house. Probably mid-C18 with later additions and
alterations. Painted uncoursed limestone rubble with stone angle quoins;
plain tile roof has integral end stacks with painted brick shafts. Two
storeys and gable-lit attic with semi-cellar to left; moulded eaves
cornice. 3-window front; early C19 leaded casements in segmental-headed
stone surrounds. Central entrance; flat-roofed porch has fixed-light
window to front and doorway to right. C20 glazed inner door. INTERIOR:
right ground-floor room has chamfered spine beam and large stone fireplace
with pilastered surround. Single-purlin roof in three bays with wide central
bay and two upper cruck trusses resting on tie beams. These are probably
contemporary with the construction of the house rather than reused from
an earlier building. Alcock (1981), p. 145.
