- one metre to south of
chancel of Church of
St Michael

GV II

Chest tomb. Dated 1828. Dressed yellow/grey sandstone. Sarcophagus
type. Base, moulded plinth, cavetto-moulded cornice, battered sides,
chamfered top with panelled ends, and antefixae. Recessed panels.
Inscribed: "In Memory of/the Revd. WILLIAM THORNES/the much respected Vicar/
of this Parish/for upwards of fifty years/he died Sept. 5th 1828/aged
77". Probably post-dated inscriptions to his wife Elizabeth, d. 1796,
his daughter Elizabeth, d. 1827,and his son the Revd. John Thornes,
d. 1813, to the north, west and east respectively.
