Hunting lodge, now disused. Circa 1675. Rendered coursed Alberbury
breccia rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings; pyramidal slate
roof. Square plan, cubic proportions. 2 storeys. Chamfered plinth,
cyma-recta moulded string; external lateral stack to south-west, top
remodelled in mid- to late C19 with pair of octagonal ashlar shafts,
now truncated. 2-light double-chamfered mullioned square windows with
cruciform ashlar dressings beneath, ground-floor window to north-west
blocked with red brick; small circular windows flanking stack on each
floor, that on ground floor to right enlarged at a later date;
2 rectangular ground-floor windows to south-east flanking entrance with
roll-moulded surround, large lintel with triangular-arched head and C19
boarded door. Interior: C17 roof with red-ochre colouring, raised
lozenge and oval decoration on purlins, and mid- to late C19 machine-sawn
king-post truss; chamfered ground-floor spine beam; C17 stone fireplaces
on ground- and first-floors with moulded triangular-arched surrounds,
deep friezes, and cyma-recta moulded cornices; C17 dog-leg corner
staircase with winders, moulded closed string, shaped splat balusters,
moulded grip rail and square top newel post with moulded finial; the
lower flight of the staircase has been rebuilt in the mid- to late
C19. The render has now largely fallen off the rubble walling but it
is likely that it was always part of the original design. Graded
II* as a generally unaltered example of a rare building type. Park
Lodge is not included on this list.
