29.1.52 adjoining courtyard walls
at Rowton Castle


Service block, now house. Dated 1828. Coursed Alberbury breccia rubble
with red sandstone ashlar dressings; plain tile roof. 2 storeys with
flanking 3-storey square towers; Tudor Gothic style. Central block with
plinth and drip mould beneath eaves; towers with cornices, chamfered-coped
battlemented parapets and integral brick stacks on inner faces with
3 octagonal shafts. 2-window centre; wooden cross-windows with chamfered
reveals and returned hoodmoulds; central C20 glazed door with returned
hoodmould; towers with first-floor 2-light wooden casements and ground-floor
wooden cross-windows, both with chamfered reveals and returned hoodmoulds,
and chamfered slit windows to second storey. Central first-floor
shield with date. 2 attached walls to right linking service block to
Rowton Castle (qv), the higher behind with chamfered coping, the lower
in front with chamfered battlemented coping and segmental-headed doorway
to left. Interior not inspected. The service block forms the north-east
side of the service courtyard to the south-west of Rowton Castle (qv).
