Cottage. Circa 1700, slightly altered and extended in the mid- to
late C19. Timber framed with painted brick nogging on high painted red
sandstone/Alberbury breccia rubble plinth; rear wall rebuilt in coursed
red sandstone rubble (see straight joints); plain tile roof. End
lobby entry plan of 2 framed bays. One storey and attic. Integral stone
and brick end stack to left; large central gabled dormer with exposed
collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts, and C19 two-light wooden
casement. Framing: square panels, 2 from sole-plate to wall-plate.
C19 two-light wooden casement to right; 6-panelled door to left with C19
gabled wooden porch. Exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen
struts in right-hand gable end; lean-to wash house to left with corrugated
iron roof, and lattice window and boarded door to front. Lean-to
addition at rear too. Interior: roof with single purlins and wind braces;
left-hand ground-floor room with plain joists and chamfered beam with
ogee stops; chamfered beam with ogee stops dividing bays; large open
fireplace has a chamfered lintel with ogee stops; corner newel staircase.
This is a largely unaltered example of a late C17 or early C18 squatters'
cottage.
