House. Mid-and late C17 with mid-to late C19 remodelling.
Timber-framed on painted rubble plinth with painted brick nogging, partly
rendered and rebuilt in painted brick and squared and coursed
sandstone; plain tile roof. Three framed bays; the north-east bay is
probably slightly later (see lighter framing). Framing: square
panels (3 from sole-plate to wall-plate) with short straight
corner braces. North-west front. Two gabled eaves dormers to left
with 3-light C20 wooden casements and C19 pierced shaped barge boards
with finials; gable ends have pierced shaped barge boards with
finials too; brick ridge stack off-centre to right and integral brick
end stack to left. 4-window front; C20 two- and 3-light wooden
casements; C19 gabled brick porch with boarded door, pierced shaped
barge boards with finial, C20 glazed lean-to addition to right and
two doors behind. Right-hand gable end has exposed collar and tie-beam
truss with one remaining V-strut. Two C20 gabled eaves dormers and
C20 lean-to conservatory at rear. INTERIOR: central ground-floor room
with chamfered spine beam and joists and open fireplace with chamfered
lintel. Brook House was reputedly the home of the Ambler family
before Ford House (q.v.) was built. It was the home of the Wall
family during the late C18 but its ownership has not been traced earlier
than 1734. The house was formerly L-shaped but the east wing has
