3/55 Stable approx. 5 metres
- to south-west of Lea
Hall

GV II

Stable. Circa 1584, with some probably late C18 alterations. Red brick
(English bond) with some blue-brick diaper work and red and grey sandstone
ashlar dressings. One storey and loft. Chamfered stone plinth, flush
stone quoins, and parapeted gable end to north-west with integral brick
end stack. South-west front: central first-floor 2-light small-paned
wooden loft casement (reduced - see straight joint to right) and loft
opening to left. Central boarded door with segmental-headed overlight
consisting of horizontal-sliding glazing bar sash. Blocked inserted
window to right. Blocked C16 doorway to left with chamfered wooden lintel,
partly obscured by probably C18 brick and stone external steps up to boarded
loft door. Left-hand gable end with segmental-headed 2-panelled door
and right-hand gable end with wooden cross window to loft and blocked
inserted ground-floor doorway. Rear: old 3-light wooden loft window
off-centre to right with chamfered mullions. Boarded loft door off-
centre to left, approached by flight of external brick and red sandstone
steps. Interior only partly inspected. Central ground-floor room with
pair of chamfered ceiling beams and stalls with octagonal posts. The
stable is sited very close to the rear of Lea Hall (q.v.) and was probably
built at the same time.
