House. Mid-to late C18 with early C19 alterations and additions.
Red brick with some red sandstone ashlar dressings. Two-span slate
roof. Double-depth plan with early C19 service wing to left. Three
storeys. Plinth, overhanging eaves, and parapeted gable ends with
stone copings and shaped stone kneelers. Pairs of external brick end
stacks with offsets. 1:1:1 bays; central break passing through eaves
and topped by open triangular pediment with stone dressings and painted
oculus in tympanum with stone architrave. Boxed glazing bar sashes
(16-pane in outer bays to ground floor) with gauged-brick heads and painted
stone cills. Central ground-floor window formerly a doorway (see straight
joints beneath). Blocked basement windows. Set-back service wing
adjoining to left with hipped slate roof and integral brick end stack. Two
bays; glazing bar sashes, 16-pane to ground floor. Right-hand return front
(of main block): central glazing bar sash to first and second floors.
Central early C19 entrance consisting of a pair of half-glazed panelled doors with
margin lights, and a Greek Doric ashlar porch with paired columns, full entablature,
including frieze with triglyphs and guttae, moulded cornice with mutules and
palmette ornament to soffit at corners, and blocking course. Two stone
steps up to door with moulded nosings. Probably later side lights with
plain surrounds. Rear: 3 bays. First-floor 2-light wooden casements
with segmental heads. Sashes to ground and first floors, all except the
central first-floor are early C19 replacements. Early C19 ground-floor
bows to left and right, each with pair or curved glazing bar sashes, and
stone frieze, moulded cornice and blocking course. Interior: mostly
redecorated in the early C19. Central staircase hall with enriched plaster
cornice consisting of acanthus dentils alternating with paterae, and central
ceiling rose. Probably late C18 dog-leg staircase with open string, stick
balusters (3 per tread), cross-grained ramped handrail and columnular foot
newel. Panelled side to lower flight. Early C19 doors have panelled
architraves with square paterae at corners. Window to rear with reeded
architrave. Early C19 hallway to right has cornice with egg and dart en-
richment and reeded soffit with paterae. Some doors with C18 moulded
architraves. Dining room: cornice with mutules and egg and dart and
acanthus enrichment. Windows with reeded architraves, panelled sides and
reeded pelmet with large finial at each end. Round archway in corridor to
service wing with radial fanlight. First-floor rooms not inspected.
