House, now divided. Probably C15 with C17 addition, partly rebuilt or refaced in
the C19. Late C20 addition at rear. Timber framed, of cruck construction, with
painted brick infill, partly rebuilt or refaced in painted brick. Machine tile
roof. Framing: large square panels (2 from sole plate to wall plate) and C17 small
square panels (3 from sole plat to wall plate). Four or five framed bays. Former
hall house with later additions. One storey and attic. North front: large brick
stack in front of ridge off-centre to right. Five gabled eaves dormers with C20
2-light wooden casements. 5-window front; mainly C20 casements, 2 to left with
segmental heads. C20 lean-to brick porch between first and second windows from
left, with 2-light casement to front and boarded door in left-hand return, and C20
glazed door between first and second windows from right. Left-hand return front
has collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and one-storey brick lean-to. Right
hand gable end has collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts. Some
timber framing at rear. Entrance to right-hand cottage in right-hand gable end
and entrance to central cottage in late C20 addition at rear. Interior of central
cottage (No 13) only inspected. Chamfered elbow cruck truss to right with cambered
collar, and roof with straight wind braces. Ground-floor chamfered cross-beamed
ceiling. Large open fireplace with chamfered lintel. Old doorway in rear wall
(formerly external) with Tudor-arched head. Interior of other cottages not inspected
but the right-hand cottage (No 14) is known to contain a cruck truss between the
2 bays and some C16 painted timbers to the ground floor, depicting fruit, flowers
and leaves etc. There may be further cruck trusses. The Critt was probably formerly
an open hall house of 2 or 3 framed bays, and was later extended. The chamfered
cruck truss was probably the former hall truss. The building requires further
investigation.
