L-shaped barn at Sheppen Fields

Former longhouse, now barn. Probably mid-C15, extended early C17 with later
additions and alterations. Timber framed of cruck construction, partly
weatherboarded and encased in red brick and uncoursed limestone rubble,
corrugated iron roof replacing thatch. Aligned east-west with animal
accommodation at lower (west) end, a cross-wing was added c.1625 and an
ashlar stack inserted in main range. All former doorway and window
openings to front have been blocked and there are mid-C20 lean-to additions.
Interior: inspection not possible at time of re-survey (1985), but the main
range is known to have 4 true cruck trusses with Alcock apex type B. The
building ceased to be a farmhouse at some time after c.1920, and is now used
as an agricultural store. V.C.H. VIII (1968), Pp.133 and plate opposite
