Farmhouse, now house. Late C16 or early C17 with considerable later additions
and alterations. Painted brick concealing timber frame, plain tile roofs. A
complex plan possibly produced by the combination of 2 originally separate
houses; the earliest part is the south range formerly a 2-bay house of 1 1/2
storeys with a central stack, later extended to east and raised to 2-storey
height; to north are 2 parallel and adjoining mid-C17 wings of which the
western is probably the earlier. 2 storeys with gable-lit attics to parallel
wings, dentilled eaves cornice to south range; framing: now brick-cased
externally except for principal rafters on south gable of west wing; irregular
fenestration, late C20 casements, 3 below eaves to south range with French
window and flat-roofed porch below; east side has 2 casements on each floor
to gable end of south range with a staircase window (formerly a doorway
approached by a flight of steps) above a cellar window to left of east wing;
one further range of C20 casements to right; present entrance in centre of
2 parallel wings, 6-panel door in late C20 pedimented doorcase; prominent
red brick ridge stack to south range with triple shafts and moulded capping,
end stacks to parallel wings. Interior: East wing has an oak newel stair
of c.1650 with vase-shaped balusters, re-used C17 wainscot panelling in south
room of west wing and upstairs one room in east wing has early C17 decorative
panelling and another in west wing plain panelling; roof of east wing and
east part of south range reconstructed in mid-C19 but west wing has double-
purlin roof with collar and tie beam trusses. V.C.H. VIII (1968), p.256.
