3/183 Barn approximately
- 30m north-east of
Barn. Probably C14 or C15 with later additions and alterations. Timber
framed of cruck construction, now clad in red brick and corrugated iron,
plain tile and corrugated iron roofs. Cruck barn of 3 bays, with 2 bays of
Queen strut construction added to north; open to roof for southern 2 1/2 bays with
loft inserted over remainder; wide entrance on east. Interior: 3 massive
jointed true cruck trusses with upper and lower collars and curved windbraces;
the south gable end, however, has been re-built using curved principals with
V-struts from the collar; some horizontal planking survives behind the
corrugated iron sheeting, showing that the barn was formerly weatherboarded. A
good set of carpenter's marks survives on the cruck trusses. There is no
sign of smoke-blackening on any of the roof trusses, suggesting that the barn
must always have been used for agricultural purposes.
