Barn and part of former house, now barn. Part of c.1600 house with
attached C17 barn. Weatherboarded timber frame on sandstone rubble plinth;
part of house rebuilt in coursed yellow sandstone rubble to front;
plain tile roof. 3-bay barn with one bay of old house to right.
Framing: square panels (3 from sole plate to wall plate) with long
straight tension braces. Truncated dressed grey sandstone stack in
front of ridge off-centre to right. Barn with central boarded door
and boarded loft door above; part of old house to right with loft opening
and small ground-floor window with boarded door to left. Right-hand
end wall (former internal wall) has ground-floor fireplace with chamfered
dressed sandstone reveals and chamfered wooden lintel, chamfered former
ceiling beam above with mortices of former joists, and exposed tie-
beam truss with raking struts and lath and plaster infill. INTERIOR:
barn has tie-beam trusses with raking struts, collar and tie-beam
end truss with queen struts, and single butt purlins with wind braces;
bay of former house has pairs of purlins. The single domestic bay
is part of a former 2-bay hall range formerly attached to the farmhouse
(The Maltsters Tap q.v.). One bay of the hall range has been demolished
separating the house and barn.
