GV II

Watermill and mill-house, now farmhouse. Early to mid-Cl9. Roughly
coursed yellow sandstone rubble with red brick window dressings; plain
tile roof. 2 storeys; site falls from east to west. Brick ridge
stack off-centre to east and integral brick end stack to west. South
front: pair of first-floor 2-light small-paned wooden-framed metal
casements to left; ground-floor segmental-headed 2-light wooden casement
to right and 3-light wooden casement to left flanking segmental-headed
boarded door. Former mill to right (see straight joint) with boarded
door and casement under large segmental head; lean-to to right with
boarded door in left-hand return. Rear: one-storey lean-to to right
with integral brick stack; segmental-headed boarded door to first
floor of mill at left. Wheel pit adjoining gable end to north with
rubblestone retaining walls; waterwheel missing at time of survey
(September 1985) but axle and access hatches from mill survive; penstock
tank also missing but the former supply pipe is still embedded in
roadway to north. Interior: complete mill fittings and machinery
survive including storage bins in loft, bag hoist-and hatches, grain
chutes with canvas end covers, 2 pairs of stones behind boarded
screen, shafts and gearing. Interior of house not inspected. The
house and mill appear to have been built at slightly different dates
(see straight joint in south front). Despite missing its waterwheel
Gretton Mill is exceptional for retaining all its internal fittings
and machinery and forms part of a complete mill group including the
former stable (q.v.) to east.
