Description

SO 59 NW CARDINGTON C.P. PLAISH

5/47 Cow houses, cartshed
- and granary, and
attached pump and
trough approx.
10 metres to south-
east of Plaish
Park Farmhouse

- II

Barn and cow houses, now cow house, cartshed and granary, and attached
pump and trough. Early and mid-C17 with C18 and late C19 alterations
and additions. Timber framed with red brick nogging on coursed sandstone
rubble plinth; partly rebuilt in uncoursed red and grey sandstone
rubble with red brick window heads; plain tile roofs. Four C17 framed
bays aligned approximately north-west/south-east with C18 tow house
added to north-east and C19 cartshed added to south-west. Framing:
square panels (4 from sole plate to wall plate) with long straight
tension braces. North-east front: Cl7 range with small loft window
to left and pitching opening to right, small ground-floor window off-
centre to right, and 2 boarded stable-type doors, that to left with
only one leaf. Left-hand return front with 9 external stone steps
up to segmental-headed boarded granary door. Rebuilt and partly extended
at rear with cartshed (see higher ridge). C18 red sandstone cow house
adjoining to right with central boarded loft door, 3 narrow loft vents
and 2 ground-floor segmental-headed slatted windows flanking central
segmental-headed stable-type door (left-hand window is blocked segmental-
headed door - see straight joints). Interior of timber framed part:
collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts and v-struts; timber
framed cross walls; ground-floor chamfered cross-beamed ceiling with
chamfered joists. The cross-beamed ceiling might suggest that part
at least of this building was formerly domestic. Pump and trough
adjoining front of C18 cow house: cast iron pump has circular shaft
with splayed spout, fluted top with curved handle, and ribbed domed
cap with large finial; rectangular grey sandstone trough. Plaish
Park Farmhouse is not included on this list.
