3/86 Barn and cartshed
- approx. 30 metres
to north-west of
Barn and cartshed. Probably C16 with late C17 and mid- to late C19
alterations and additions. Weatherboarded timber frame, partly of
cruck construction; C19 uncoursed red and grey sandstone end walls
with red brick dressings and gables; plain tile roof. 5 framed bays.
Framing: square panels, 2 from sole plate to wall plate. South-
east front: 3 loft openings to right, boarded door off-centre to left,
and 2 cart entrances to left; pair of boarded loft doors under segmental
head in right-hand gable end. Interior: 3 full cruck trusses, 2 with
collars and former end truss to left with collar, tie-beam and square-
panel framing; C17 collar and tie-beam truss to left with queen struts
and angle braces. Cruck trusses have scotches on inner and side faces.
The barn was probably formerly of 3 cruck-framed bays to right (the
right-hand end wall rebuilt in late C19) with C17 and C19 bays added
to the left. The barn forms part of a complete farmstead group including
a small barn (now cow house) (q.v.) and farmhouse (q.v.). Alcock,
pp.96 and 144.
