Farmhouse, now house. Mid-C17 with mid- to late C19 and C20 alterations
and additions. Timber framed with painted brick nogging, partly rendered
and partly rebuilt and extended in painted sandstone rubble and brick;
plain tile roof. Hall range of one framed bay plus later bay to right,
and projecting 2-bay gabled cross wing to left. Framing: square panels
(3 from sole plate to wall plate) with long straight tension braces;
gable end of cross wing has pseudo carved brackets at first-floor
level and tie-beam truss with 2 collars, queen struts and v-struts.
One storey and attic. Three C20 raking dormers to right, each with
3-light leaded wooden casements; large brick ridge stack at junction
with cross wing. Hall range to left with small C20 casement to left,
small segmental-headed 2-light sealed window in later kitchen to right,
and central rendered porch with catslide roof; small segmental-headed
2-light C20 wooden casement to front, and segmental-headed boarded
door in left-hand return; cross-wing to left with 3-light C20 leaded
wooden attic and ground-floor casements. Interior: hall range contains
chamfered spine beam with plain stops, and large open fireplace with
ogee-stopped chamfered lintel, bread oven with cast-iron door, and
spit arm; cross-wing contains timber framed cross wall and pair of
chamfered beams with ogee stops. Roof with large purlins and straight
wind braces. It is possible that the cross wing formerly extended
further to the rear as the end bay is short, the back wall has been
rebuilt in stone and brick and the gable has been half-hipped. Standish
Cottage was formerly known as Top House Farmhouse. The house forms
part of a small farmstead group also including barns to the west (q.v.).
