SMETHCOTT C.P.
SMETHCOTT
Parish House

II

Row of 3 cottages. Probably mid- to late C18, possibly incorporating
earlier core. Painted red sandstone rubble with corrugated iron over
thatched roof. Row of 3 single-cell cottages. One storey arid attic.
Small eyebrow eaves dormer off-centre to left with 2-light casement.
Large brick ridge stack off-centre to right and external brick end stack
to left with late C19 brick top stage. 3 small casements, each with
boarded doors to left. 2 later rendered buttresses. 2-light: attic
window in right-hand gable end. Interior: central cottage with low
beamed ceiling, open fireplace with lintel and C19 range, and winder
stair at rear by stack. Interiors of end cottages not inspected. The
row of cottages might incorporate an earlier 2-bay house to the right-
(see straight joint to the left), possibly framed. The cottages are
a rare and unaltered survival of C18 squatters' dwellings.
