Barn, latterly cow houses, now disused. Mid-C17 with mid- to late C19
alterations Weatherboarded timber frame on dressed red sandstone and
brick plinth; slate and corrugated-iron roof. Framing: small square
panels, 3 from sole plate to wall plate. 4 framed bays. One storey
and loft. North-east side: 3 loft openings, 2 to right with boarded
doors, and 6 alternating slatted windows and boarded doors to ground
floor. Interior: tie-beam roof trusses with angle braces and raking
struts; collar and tie-beam end trusses with queen struts; single purlins
with wind braces. The loft floor is probably a C19 insertion. Newton
on the Hill was the family home of the Goughs. Richard Gough was the
author of Antiquityes and Memoryes of the Parish of Myddle, written
in 1701.
