19/128 The Elephant and
- Castle Hotel

GV II

Inn. Dated 1734, remodelled in the early C19. Rendered brick on grey
sandstone ashlar plinth; slate roof, hipped to right. L-plan. 2 storeys.
Plinth, dentil brick eaves cornice, and stone-coped parapeted gable
ends. Integral brick stack to front at left, external brick end stack
to right-hand return, and 3 stacks at rear. 4-bays; glazing bar sashes.
Pair of late C20 doors in second bay from right with stuccoed Doric
or Tuscan porch (damaged at time of survey January 1986) which has 3-part
rectangular overlight above. Painted datestone above with relief of
elephant and castle: "1734". Right-hand return front of 3 bays; inserted
late C20 half-glazed door to right.
