18/147 Wall enclosing Churchyard
- of Saint Andrew

Churchyard wall. Early and late C18 and late C19. Dressed and roughly
dressed red sandstone with uncoursed red sandstone additions. The church
of Saint Andrew (q.v.) stands on a raised circular platform; the early
C18 section of the wall follows the line of the south-east quarter of
the platform but the churchyard was enlarged to the north and west in
the late C18 and C19 and the wall rebuilt. C18 dressed chamfered coping;
C19 roughly dressed chamfered coping. A coping block on the south-
east section of wall is inscribed: "John Harpar And/William Joron (?)/
Wardens 172-". The inscription is not completely legible (January 1986).
The raised platform suggests the site might have an early origin.
