Farmhouse. Dated 1744 (rainwater head). Late C19 addition at rear. Red
brick with grey sandstone ashlar dressings. Hipped plain tile roof. 3
storeys with 2 storey addition at rear. South-west front: chamfered quoins,
moulded plinth, moulded string course between ground and first floors and
moulded eaves cornice. Brick ridge stack off-centre to left and external
lateral brick stack at rear. 2:1:2 bays; glazing bar sashes with exposed
boxes, moulded stone cills and rusticated stone lintels with raised keystones.
Central door of 6 raised and fielded panels with 3-part rectangular overlight
and stone doorcase consisting of lugged architrave and frieze with central
uncarved block and plain console brackets supporting triangular pediment. Right-
and left-hand return fronts of 2 bays; mostly blind windows with trompe
glazing bar sashes. Rear: chamfered plinth and toothed-brick eaves cornice.
2 bays to right with glazing bar sashes. Lead rainwater head dated: "17
EC 44". Late C19 wing at rear. 2 storeys. Hipped roof. Sashes with
gauged brick heads and raised keystones. C18 service block adjoining at rear.
Red brick with red sandstone ashlar dressings and plain tile roof. One storey and
attic. Chamfered quoins and kneelers, chamfered plinth, plat bands, toothed-
brick eaves cornice, and parapeted gable end to south-east with chamfered stone
coping and integral brick end stack. South-west front: central gabled eaves
dormer with 2-light wooden casement and moulded barge boards. Blocked or
blind window to left with stone cill and keyed stone lintel. Boarded door to
right. Late C19 glazed lean-to addition to front. Left-hand gable end has
first-floor-leaded wooden cross window with stone cill and keyed stone lintel
and blind ground-floor window to left with stone cill and keyed stone lintel;
C20 lean-to-addition to right. Rear: central gabled eaves dormer. 2 segmetal-
headed wooden cross windows, that to right with lowered cill. Interior of
house: largely complete C18 fixtures and fittings. Staircase hall: moulded
cornice. Dog-leg staircase rising 2 storeys with landings; open string with cut
brackets, turned balusters (2 per tread), turned columnar newel posts, and
moulded ramped handrail. Right-hand ground-floor room: raised and fielded
panelling with dado rail and moulded dentil cornice. Fireplace with marble
surround, lugged architrave with egg and dart enrichment, moulded dentil cornice
and lugged panel with egg and dart enrichment. Left-hand ground-floor room:
raised and fielded panelling with dado rail and moulded cornice. Fireplace
altered but with C18 lugged panel above. Two smaller panelled rooms to left.
Doors with 6 raised and fielded panels and moulded architraves. The stair-
case is approached from the rear of the house, not, as is more usual, from the
front door. There is a blocked doorway in the rear wall at the foot of the
stairs which suggests that there was formerly a principal entrance here,
before the C19 wing was added. There is no evidence that the staircase has
been altered. The "EC" on the rainwater head might refer to a member of the
Corbet family , who owned land in this area. This is a largely complete and
well-detailed example of a large mid-Cl8 Farmhouse.
