Kitchen garden walls, attached garden buildings and gardener's house. Circa 1822-28, by Sir John Soane. Some late C19 alterations and additions.

Red brick walls (English bond except for northern length which is in Flemish bond) with grey sandstone coping. Rectangular enclosure approximately 80 x 45 metres with quadrant corners and quadrant link walls to former gardener's house to west. Entrances in the corners of the east and west walls and in the centre to south consisting of round archways with large flush-panelled doors (eight panels with two-panelled tympana) and flanking piers with panelled pendentive dome type stone finials. Similar piers at junction with quadrant link walls to former gardener's house. Northern length of wall higher than rest and further raised in late C19 to accommodate greenhouse on south side. Steps down slope in three lengths. Panelled end piers and stone flue caps with miniature pediments and antefixae of typical Soane design.

Lean to fruit house on north side, in line with former roof height. Red brick with stone-coped parapeted end walls and graded slate roof. Alternate 20-paned glazing bar sashes and boarded doors with stone hinge blocks and tapered stone lintels (to accommodate the fall of the ground). Late C19 brick water tower adjoining at east end. The central room projects slightly and has a doorway leading through to the kitchen garden. The room is called the Fruit Room on the Soane drawing. Late C19 lean-to wrought-iron greenhouses on south side of wall. T-section ribs, curbed at base and resting on low brick walls. Short section projecting at right angles to right. This section of the garden walls is probably built in Flemish bond to allow for the passage of hot air within enabling the growing of fruit.

The Garden House: red brick with hipped graded slate roof with lead flat. Two storeys over basement. Wide eaves. Pair of brick stacks, each consisting of two square shafts with inset corners. West front: three bays; 20-pane glazing bar sashes with stone cills and stone lintels with recessed lower edges. First floor ten-pane glazing bar sashes. Set back one storey two bay wings. Flat roofs with coped parapets and parapeted gable ends. Integral brick end stacks. Semi-circular openings in each gable end. One storey five bay addition set back to left. C20 addition set back to right. One storey C20 addition between quadrant link walls at rear.

This was formerly the kitchen garden for Pell Wall (q.v.). Drawings of the kitchen garden, by Soane, are preserved in the Soane Museum.
