House, now inn. Dated 1669. Late C19 or early C20 alterations.
Timber framed with plastered and painted brick infill, pebbledashed
to right-hand return front. Painted dressed sandstone and later
brick plinth. C19 planted timbers to front and underbuilt in painted
brick to right. Plain tile roofs. Framing: small square panels
(5 from sole plate to wall plate ) with long straight tension braces.
First-floor panels to front with diagonal struts forming lozenge patterns,
and slightly jettied attic with hewn bracket to left(bressumer obscured
by planted timber),tier of square quatrefoil panels beneath eaves,
and gables with tiers of cusped small square panels and cusped curved
v-struts. L-plan; 2 + 2 framed bays. 2 storeys and attic over
basement with 2 storey wing at rear. Integral brick end stack to
left, integral brick lateral stack to right and external brick end
stack to rear. 2-window front; C19 three-light wooden casements,
ground-floor lights with straight-sided arched heads. Two-light
segmental-headed basement openings. C17 two-storey timber framed
gabled porch off-centre to right with tie-beam dated: "IB (or IE)
1669", cusped v-struts in gable, 2-light first-floor wooden casements
to each side, and open ground floor with 2 posts, curved brackets
and pair of C19 two-panelled doors with rectangular overlights.
Late C19 or early C20 stone steps (in 2 flights) with brick wall to
front. Carriageway to left-hand with C19 pilastered surround and
double-canted sign above. Tie-beam truss in left-hand gable end
with 2 collars and queen struts. Pair of stepped timber framed gables
at rear; each has collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and
v-struts. Early to mid-C19 two-storey brick addition in angle at
rear with 16-pane glazing bar sashes and integral brick lateral stack.
Interior only partly inspected. Rear wing has pair of ovolo-moulded
ceiling beams with ogee stops.
