Entrance lodge. Circa 1868-70, by William Eden Nesfield. Red brick
with banded plain and fishscale slate-hung gables. Graded slate roof.
T-plan. One storey and attic. Tall chamfered brick plinth. External
lateral brick stack to south with pitched-roofed link to attic and ashlar
dressings to pair of tall intersecting circular shafts with oversailing
tops. East front: left-hand gabled cross wing has double-chamfered
plinth, canted bay with 1-:3-:1-light wooden mullioned and transomed
window, plaster panels above with incised ornament, and steeply-hipped
slate roof. Central door set back to right in angle of wing with 3
beaded flush lower panels, 2 glazed upper panels and porch formed by
overhanging eaves, slightly raised over door, supported on wooden posts;
short rail to right with turned baluster and wrought-iron finial. Small
one-light wooden casement to right. Right-hand gable end with 3-light
wooden mullioned and transomed window. Cast-iron square section downpipes,
and cast rainwater heads with disc or 'pie' ornament, typical of Nesfield.
Adjoining gate and gate piers. Red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings.
Low brick linking walls with chamfered brick tops to chamfered stone
copings. Former wrought-iron railings now removed except for small
section in side of porch. Pair of square gate piers, each with moulded
stone plinth , moulded cornice and pyramidal stone cap with reeded
edges at base, projecting disc or 'pie' ornament and trumpet finial.
Late C20 wooden gate replacing C19 one. End pier to left, similar to
gate piers but smaller. Interior of lodge not inspected. This lodge marks the
former north entrance to Cloverley Hall (q.v.), of 1864-70 and also by
