House, now divided. Circa 1720. Red brick with painted sandstone
dressings. 2-span slate roof. 3 storeys over basement. Chamfered
quoins, plat band between ground and first floors, with raised top course,
and parapet with stone coping. Parapeted gable ends with pairs of
integral brick end stacks. 4 bays; 4-pane sashes (C18 glazing bars
removed) with painted moulded stone cills, rendered reveals, gauged-brick
heads, and raised keystones with moulded tops. Top of basement window
to right with painted stone lintel. C18 oak door in second bay from
right with 6 raised and fielded panels, and early C19 Ionic doorcase with
pair of unfluted pilasters supporting entablature. C18 lead downpipe to
right with fluted semi-circular rainwater head. Ground-floor straight
joint to right of downpipe, possibly evidence of a former doorway, probably
inserted. Interior partly inspected. Sumptuous C18 dog-leg oak staircase,
rising 2 floors, with landings, open string with cut scrolled brackets,
3 balusters to each tread (column-on-vase balusters flanking iron-twist
baluster, attenuated to half-landing), and ramped moulded handrail with
curved knees and wreathed with half splay to Doric columnular foot newel.
Ramped moulded dado rail. Small ground-floor C18 cupboard beneath
stairs with raised and fielded panel. This house is particularly notable
for its fine early C18 staircase.
