Description

ELLESMERE RURAL C.P. EASTWICK LANE (east side)
SJ 33 NE
4/113 Old Groves
-
- II
Cottage. Probably C15 remodelled late C17 with later additions and
alterations. Painted brick encapsulating timber frame of cruck-framed
construction, rendered to right gable end. Slate roof. Present cottage
in 2 bays incorporating one cruck-framed bay of former open hall. One
storey and attic. C20 casements to either side of infilled doorway
immediately to right of centre and 2 full gabled eaves dormers with C20
casements. Small integral end stack to left and prominent stepped
external end stack to right. Projecting single-purlin and wall-plate ends.
Interior. Inspection not possible at time of resurvey (February 1987) but
said to retain 2 true cruck trusses, that to centre of present building
with low horizontal beam having carved decoration on right side, suggestive
of a coved dais truss; other truss to right gable end. Single-storey
gabled projection to front on left and C20 addition attached to left gable
end are not of special architectural interest.
