8/137 Old Hardwick Farmhouse
Farmhouse. Probably C17 with later additions and alterations.
Roughcast timber frame and red brick; slate roof with deep eaves and
plain bargeboards. Original T-plan comprising long hall range with
wide gabled cross-wing to left; narrower cross-wing added to right of
hall range with 2-storey C19 gabled addition to rear on right form present
basic H-plan. One storey and attic to hall range, 2 storeys to cross-wings.
1:1:1 windows, all 4-paned horned sashes, tripartite to centre on ground
floor and in gabled eaves dormer above,except C20 casements to canted bays
on ground floor of cross-wings. Lean-to porch with half-glazed panelled
door in angle between hall range and left cross-wing. Lean-to attached to
continuation of hall range to right of right cross-wing. Prominent
stepped external lateral stack to left of left cross-wing; reduced red
brick ridge stack to hall range immediately to left of right cross-wing
and integral end stack to C19 gabled addition to rear. Prominent tapering
stack with C19 top and earlier base in angle between outshut to hall range
and C19 gabled addition to rear. Interior. Full inspection not possible
at time of resurvey (February 1987) but room to right of entrance has 2
chamfered spine beams and joists. Wainscot panelling. Room to right cross-
wing also has chamfered ceiling beams and large chimney breast below ridge
stack has infilled inglenook fireplaces. Roof trusses said to survive.
