BRUTON CP PLOX (North West side)
8/146 Plox House

House, now part of King's School. Dated 1687. Local stone with pebbledash rendering; stone slate roof with plain
gables; stone and brick chimney stacks. Plain roof with twin rear gables, at right angles to street. 2 storeys with
attic; street elevation of 2 bays with plain gable to left; stone plaque in gable reads "A/TM/1687"; cruciform timber
windows to upper level both bays, and to bay 1 a simple doorway with door in Gothic style, and over an early C20 timber
hood on wood brackets on stone corbels; in the roof a single hipped roof dormer to bay 2. West facade of 3 bays, with
12-pane sash windows in plain surrounds, with low part glazed door in heavy frame to right of bay 3. A lower matching
3-bay extension to North. Interior not seen, but a report speaks of a fine C17 stair in an open well in one of the East
gables, the newel posts having finials and pendents; some door frames said to be in transitional phase between ovolo
and bolection mouldings. Became school premises in 1902, first as Junior School, then in 1947 as part of senior school.
