Mill building. Mid C19. Cary stone cut and squared, red brick dressings; double Roman clay tile roof between stepped
coped gables. Three storeys five bays. Lias stone plinth; small-pane cast-iron windows in toothed brick surrounds with
keystoned segmental arched heads; door to bay 1 first floor, approached by steel staircase which continues round and up
west gable to door at second floor level; doors to all levels bay 3, with hoist bar above top door. Inside, cast iron
columns, timber board-cased stairs, little changed. Large lean-to against east gable not of special interest, neither
is single-storey concrete block building linking this building with canteen (qv). Part of a twine, rope and sailcloth
factory transferred to this site by Charles Donne in 1818: mill extended 1860-1890, and this building probably of that
period. (McGarvie M, Castle Cary: Avalon Industries, 1980).
